Applicants must be American authors with at least one full-length fiction or nonfiction book commercially published by a mainstream publisher. Self-paid publishing does not qualify. Applicants must show need and include documentation, such as a doctor's letter, proof of the emergency, or the first two pages of a redacted 1040. People who received a Carnegie Fund grant in the past five calendar years cannot apply.
