Just landed in Atlanta with children in tow? These places help you get the essentials set up — food money, health care, child care, and a soft landing for the kids.
Georgia WIC is a state health and nutrition program for pregnant people, new parents, infants, and children under age 5. It helps eligible families get healthy foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals to health care and other services.
Curator’s note: If you're pregnant or have kids under 5, WIC helps pay for groceries and formula — one call sets up an appointment anywhere in Georgia.
Quality Care for Children is a Georgia nonprofit that helps families find and afford quality child care. They also support child care providers with coaching, training, food and nutrition programs, and help improving child care quality.
Curator’s note: The people to call about child care: they help you find quality daycare and apply for Georgia's CAPS subsidy to help pay for it.
Bright from the Start, also called DECAL, is Georgia's state agency for early child care and early learning. It helps families find child care, Pre-K, child care payment help, meal programs, and family resources, and it supports and monitors child care providers across Georgia.
Curator’s note: Georgia's early-care agency — free Pre-K for 4-year-olds and the official lookup for licensed child care near you.
Sheltering Arms Educare Atlanta is an early childhood education center in Atlanta's Mechanicsville neighborhood. It helps young children get ready for school and supports families with Head Start, Early Head Start, Georgia Pre-K, family engagement, and referrals to community resources.
Curator’s note: A highly regarded early-learning center in Mechanicsville with family support built in — worth asking about openings.
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Arthur M. Blank Hospital is a children's hospital on the North Druid Hills campus in Atlanta. It provides 24-hour pediatric emergency care, trauma care, surgery, cancer and blood disorder care, lab and imaging services, and many specialty services for babies, children, teens, and young adults.
Curator’s note: The children's hospital — 24-hour pediatric emergency care. Keep the number on the fridge.
Good Samaritan Health Center is a nonprofit clinic in Atlanta that helps people get affordable health care. They offer medical care, dental care, counseling, prenatal care, health education, medicine help, and food access through their farm and market.
Curator’s note: Doctor and dentist visits on a sliding scale for uninsured families — checkups, sick visits, and dental care for kids and parents.
The Latin American Association is a nonprofit that helps Latino and immigrant families in Georgia. It offers food support by appointment, SNAP and Medicaid enrollment help, immigration legal services, job training, English and computer classes, youth programs, and referrals for families in crisis.
Curator’s note: Bilingual family services — food help, immigration legal aid, and job support, all under one roof, en español.
Agape Youth & Family Center is a nonprofit in northwest Atlanta that serves children, families, young adults, and seniors. It runs after-school tutoring, mentoring, summer camps, college and career support, meals for kids, family events, and a daytime senior program.
Curator’s note: Afterschool programs and family support in northwest Atlanta — a soft landing for school-age kids in a new city.
