HUD explains public housing and Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8) and has a tool to find affordable apartments. Local public housing authorities take the applications and keep the waiting lists, not HUD.

Disaster Housing ResourcesService

After a disaster, FEMA and other agencies give first help, and HUD helps with longer recovery. HUD has a disaster phone line and points people to FEMA and housing counselors.

FHA and Homeownership InformationService

HUD gives information about FHA loans, buying a HUD home, paying off an FHA loan, and becoming a homeowner. You can call the FHA line or talk with a HUD-approved counselor.

Homelessness Resource ReferralsService

HUD does not run shelters. If you are homeless or may become homeless, HUD tells you to dial 2-1-1 and press 6 for homeless services. It also lists phone numbers for veterans and seniors.

Housing Discrimination ComplaintsService

If you think you were treated unfairly in housing, you can file a complaint with HUD online or by phone. The law covers unfair treatment because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, family status, or disability.

HUD-Approved Housing CounselingService

HUD-approved housing counseling agencies give advice that fits your own housing needs. This includes buying a home and facing foreclosure. You can search online or call (800) 569-4287 to find one.
